Collecting Award Winners

I’ve been playing more with the Kindle the last few days. It really needs a better interface for navigating books. Three things I think the Kindle should have:

  • The ability to manage the document collections through the filesystem
  • Nested document collections
  • HTML support

I’m really hopeful that the noteslate doesn’t turn out to be vaporware. With the solar-charger cover, it is essentially the lightbook. It claims to be open-source, but there’s no access to the code from their website.

Bleg: A Staff for Burning Man

Craigslist is dying. Here is, verbatim, a perfectly reasonable post that I just attempted to put in San Francisco general that was flagged and deleted within ten minutes of posting:

I’m headed to Burning Man on September 2nd and I need a staff (wooden not people) as part of my costume.

Imagine the bastard child of Gandalf’s and the Joker’s staves bred with Gambit’s ― power focusing chaos into volatility.

Physically solidly enough that if I bang it around it won’t fall apart ― a metal inlay, perhaps? No points sharp edges.

Sizewise, I’m 6’2″ about 180lbs and not massive, but solid. I like a slight heft in my things, but want to be able to carry the staff around for a while.

I’d like it to be well-enough balanced I could practice spinning fire with it.

To the authors of the top twenty bids received before close of business the 19th, I offer: anything. Anything, provided:

  • it is smaller than a breadbox (I’m driving to the Burn from Baltimore and have limited space)
  • it costs less than $20 (20 * $20 = $400 and that’s quite a bit of money for me)
  • it requires less than one hour to procure
  • it is not immoral (a boy has to have his standards)

In return for the staff, I’ll do my best to provide whatever the artist considers adequate compensation for their time.

I’d like to collect bids for two days, so the the chosen bidder and I have two weeks (19th – 2nd) to prepare for the exchange in the desert.

Anyone interested? I’m willing to put some resources into this exchange if I can find the right artist.

Subtle As A Thrown Brick

I went to see Wolverine with Jenni last night. It was disappointing. What irritated me the most was how the entire story was communicated through dialogue. How many times did they debate out loud whether or not he should let his animal nature take over?

They could just as easily have let him slaughter everyone in the place where they made him into Weapon X. Show him coming to with the blood of a general he respects on his hands, and let the scene and the acting tell of his struggle with the animal within rather than saying it out loud half a dozen times.

Instead not one innocent dies at his hand the entire movie. Evil people and faceless henchman die, and his struggle with his nature makes no sense. Who gives a shit about his rage if all the beast inside him does is kill bad guys?

Dolls All The Way Down

Dollhouse started out a bit slow, but this most recent episode really pulled it out. (I’m going to talk about plot points, so watch it first or you won’t be surprised.)

The time period for the show is today. A few years ago, unbeknowst to the rest of us, scientists made a breakthrough in using light and magnetic waves to affect neuroplasticity. They essentially figured out how to delete the personality from a body and write a new one in. Using this technology they created an underground organization that provides made to order people: The Dollhouse.

This episode included a couple entertaining twists. It was revealed that the stern British headmistress who runs the organization is in a secret affair with one of the “actives” as a programmed doll is referred to. Imagine her position of having a man tailored to be her ideal mate, but who is a fabrication. She’s a high level executive in a massive criminal organization, her dating pool has to be pretty shallow. What’s more is that he is programmed to be passionately in love with her:

To see the clip, go to the original entry or watch it on Hulu.
