Party Time

I am recuperating from a really long week. It started last Saturday and went something like:

  • Saturday, August 28: spent most of the day getting Delirium htmlized and online. Slept in the bureau on the couch.
  • Sunday, August 29: worked on Delirium some more and went over to the Arc en Ciel auberge and in a classic lack of good sense stayed up all night watching movies.
  • Monday, August 30: was enrolled on the Nouakchott Notes staff and spent the whole day when I was supposed to be in meetings learning Pagemaker. That night was our mtr party for which I had downloaded seven hours of dance music and produced 40 liters of sangria.
  • Tuesday, August 31: I left the party at 5am and wandered to the bureau where I worked for about an hour before napping for a couple hours. I continued to work on Nouakchott Notes all day.
  • Wednesday, September 1: I pulled an all nighter working on Notes and kept going pretty much all day. I am getting reasonably good at Pagemaker by this point. Also loosing the ability for coherent speech from lack of sleep. The long work day was broken by me wandering out to help someone change money. There are not undercover police officers posing as money changers and confiscating money and arresting people. Passed out on the floor of the hotel “Welcome” and spent the night in the middle of a roomful of people completely unconscious.
  • Thursday, September 2: Came back to put the finishing touches on Notes and found that one of our two new ICT stagiaires had decided to go home. I decided to show her a few of the sights. After some Chinese food, ice cream, salsa dancing and gin I crashed at the Arc en Ciel again. (She also let me get a much needed shower.)
  • Friday, September 3: Spent the day visiting Nouakchott a bit, but mostly watching TV and chatting in the hotel. Saw her to her plane at 9pm and went home to be greeted by my surprised guardian who asked me if I’d been on a trip for the last week.
  • Saturday, September 4: After some much needed sleep, spent today hanging out with another volunteer shopping for phones and pie pans. Headed out now to have some Mexican food with her and a Mauritanian who wants to work on his English.

So, a good week, but exhausting. I’m very happy with the Nouakchott Notes though. I’ve not gotten to make many pretty things in my life and it came out pretty good. I’m definitely better prepared for the next one.
