for: fortune (dirty words, bewarned)

I added some new fortunes this morning (including a library of Homer Simpson quotes) and I gotten some interesting ones so far. I just wanted to share one or two.

“I love this fucking University, and this University loves fucking me.”

“Ocean, n.:

A body of water occupying about two-thirds of a world made for man — who has no gills.”

url: consciousness and the physical world

Those of you that read slashdot will already have seen his perhaps but I thought it is neat and would pass it along to those of you who don’t. The url is http://www.princeton.edu/~pear/ and it is the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research pages.

What they are studying is the affects of human consciousness on certain types of physical interactions. I’ll just include a little excerpt to tell what they are finding. The interesting application of this research is that are hoping to design input mechanisms for computers that are thought based. It would kick ass if I could think my e-mails. =)

q: true?

To believe your own thought, allergist to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men — that is genius.

re: computer people

can you reframe what you are saying and see at least g as trying to help you by telling you that if you are pouring lots of time into java or whatever that it might be wasted if they can’t support it?

I wonder sometimes what picture you have of me in your head. In my own mind I have as one of the principle tenents of my rational makeup the statement that the truth is not something that is defined according to my emotional state. Certainly I have emotional reactions to events and I do not try to squelch my reactions, simply to recognize their existence and keep track of possible ways that they are influencing my judgement.

I think that computer geekuses are among some of the most spiteful people I know. I can understand where some of the arrogance comes from, being able to work magic on these machines that so baffle much of the world, but I think many of them insecure in their dominance and unwilling to share in power.

This morning G came by to fix some computers in the lab and he asked what I was working on and I told him that I was working on HPEO stuff for the honors program and he said something to the affect that since I was the only java programmer around when I left they would be unable to maintain the software and I would leave them in a bind. I’ve never known him to be especially supportive about technical things, be it when I was setting up my linux machine or now.

housing

Hey everybody, I have just joined the ranks of the employed for this summer; all the way to the end of next; that’s right, I’m co-oping. =) The pay ain’t great, but it’ll be enough to pay off school when I get back (actually I’ll make enough each month to pay for a semester) and it really will be nice not to have to work 30 hours a week while going to school to make my bills. I do however get to play with explosives. =) I am going to work with a company out of Huntsville called Military Technologies, Inc. who specializes in missile visualization and guidance systems. Neato, huh?

I’m going to write more about leaving and how all that affects my life but I wanted to offer up a bit of logistics first. Housing. I currently life with AH and CL (the artist) and they are going to be looking for someone to take my place for the summer. I really like the atmosphere at my place. It is relaxed and there are two cats. Granted the relaxed wanders into messy sometimes and the cats are kinda dumb, but it is a good place to live in my ever humble opinion. =)

If you’re interested just give me or AH a holler. Rent is $150 with about $50ish in miscellaneous utilities and it’s about a block from campus.
