for: symposium

I noticed a link this morning on a symposium being held by Douglas Hofstader at Stanford entitled “Will Spiritual Robots Replace Humanity By 2100?” It sounds interesting. =)

house note

Yesterday in giving directions to my house for the movie tonight at 7:00 I said, price in honest expression of my belief, cialis that I lived in a white house at te bottom of the hill. Well, abortion upon approach today and further reflection I realized that my house is brick and more than likely has always been such. =)

Unique features include two pvc pipes and a broken water heater by the driveway.

sj: tapes

I had The Brothers K going down and on the way back I’ve had The Tao of Pooh and The Art of Happiness (by the Dali Lama.) I just wanted to make a couple of brief notes of thoughts that I have been having as hurtle down the highway.

It is interesting to see the contrast between the relaxed simplicity of Taoism and the more structured discipline of Buddhism. I find aspects on the discipline appealing but on the whole I find the relaxed and unattached nature of Taoism to be more natural for me.

I have been thinking about attachment as I drove and I feel that I am once again coming up against issues of separation that I dealt with when I first got here. It is certainly from a more engaged and engaging perspective but it is the same issues.

bq: the brothers k

On my long car trips I like to listen to books on tape to wile away the house and on this journey my selection is _The Brothers Karamazov_ by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The most pungent sections of the book for me are the discussions on religion. There are several concurrent discussions going on each having different underlying assumptions and my favorite is that of the brother Ivan, the sceptical athiest. He is pained by the world he sees and dissastisfied with the answers that he gets. This one section really got to me and I thought I would share.

I’ve just finished pasting it in and I have a couple of notes. Foremost on reading this I can begin to understand the guilt of original sin. Not really the actual story of original sin but what it is to feel unworthy of life simply for being alive. Being a part of humanity that has done such horrible things throughout the years and who still has the seed of hatred buried inside. Like somehow just for being a man I deserve punishment for all of what man does and has done.
