honors computer program difficulties

Hello, my name is Will Holcomb and I am the Computer Committee chair for the honors program and I was recently responsible for a bug in one of the computer programs.

The program is called getnames.com and it defines names for use with mail and other programs on the vax. (Letting you send mail to “will” rather than “wjh3957”.) If you don’t use this program then you were not affected and you needn’t worry about anything. If you do use this program then there is a good chance that your names.dat was overwritten accidentally.

I sincerely apologize if this happened. The mistake was a result of a variety of factors. I won’t go into the details but the end result was that of the two main hard drives that gemini uses to store user accounts only the one that is used for student accounts was searched for your names.dat and since all professors are on disk$research the file came up not found and was accidentally overwritten.
